| It is not always necessary to fly to your holiday destination. Europe offers excellent rail services and routes to Austria, Hungary and Romania are also very scenic. For a more leisurely journey with the opportunity to stop en route consider the train. Services to Austria are fast and efficient. As you travel further east and reach the Carpathian Mountains train services become much slower but this is more than made up for by the scenery. Most continental journeys can also be made easier by booking comfortable sleeping compartments while most trains comprise buffet cars and restaurants. Finally, train travel is significantly more environmentally friendly than flying - 95% less greenhouse gases are released into the atmosphere for the equivalent rail journey. | LONDON St Pancras to AUSTRIA, HUNGARY & ROMANIA Please note the following schedules offer guideline connections to destinations in Austria, Hungary and Romania. However, different routes are available if you wish to make alternative stopovers en route. The most convenient option, though not necessarily the quickest, is from London St Pancras to Paris Nord by Eurostar, Paris to Munich by overnight sleeper train, munich to Budapest by intercity train then the final leg to Romania by overnight sleeper or intercity services providing direct access to Bucharest, Timisoara, Cluj, Sibiu, Sighisoara and Brasov. You can also travel via Brussels, Köln, the Rhine Valley and Vienna. Vienna and Budapest make excellent stopovers. There are convenient left luggage facilities in both Budapest and Vienna and the city centre is convenient from the main stations, Sleeper car, couchette and first class supplements are available. Discounts sometimes available on selected routes through Germany. Lower priced tickets require early booking to secure availability. There is no refund for cancellation within 15 days of departure. Rail travel is generally more expensive than air travel, but it is much more of an adventure. Rail tickets may be booked in conjunction with other travel arrangements through reputable travel agents. They can also usually book rail passes, and in the case of a few specials, local rail tickets. The latter are usually only possible in conjunction with other travel arrangements as tickets would need to be delivered to you en route. See our 'Getting Around' Page for information about booking trains in Romania. We have listed some of the more convenient transeuropean schedules below . All schedules are subject to change from time to time as individual railway companies adjust their timetables (usually in December). We recommend you use www.seat61.com for updates and alternative route information and times. |

| STOP PRESS: RAIL TRAVEL INSIDE OR FROM ROMANIA ONLY Domestic rail tickets in Romania, and international tickets from Romania to other destinations in Europe can also be organised in conjunction with other travel services. Fares for journeys are LOWER than for journeys commencing outside Romania. Tickets can be delivered to your hotel or a guide will present them to you at the appropriate station prior to departure. For other European countries it may work out better value if you book a rail pass such as Eurodomino Pass. This works well for Austria where regional passed are useful for exploring an area from a transport hub, or if making a circular tour by rail inside the country |
GO GREEN Travel by Train The current surge in air travel is one of the biggest causes of climate change contributing up to 15% of greenhouse gases each year. Greenhouse gas emissions caused by UK air travel have doubled in the past 13 years from 20.1m tonnes in 1990 to 39.5m tons in 2004. In addition aircraft emissions which go directly into the stratosphere have 2.7 times the environmental impact of those on the ground. Air travel produces 19 times the greenhouse gas emissions of trains. A trip to Vienna, Prague, Budapest or Bucharest by train would emit 95% less carbon dioxide than the equivalent flight. Train travel is no solution for a short trip to eastern Europe but it is certainly worth considering for a longer holiday where stopovers and spectacular scenery can be incorporated into the overall experience. |
